‘People do not buy goods and services, they buy relations, stories and magic.’ Seth Godin

What is your brand, and do you need one?  Your brand is what sets you and your business apart from everyone else, and yes you do need one.  Your brand is who you are and what you stand for – it’s your voice to the world.  It’s the expectations that your customers or clients have that makes them choose you over other similar businesses.

It’s very easy to hide behind your business but that doesn’t work for long.  Not if you want big success.  People want to know who they’re buying from especially if it’s a small business.  Even some of the big corporates these days have a ‘face’.  Look at one of the most famous examples in Virgin boss Richard Branson who is the brand and face of Virgin.  He weaves his stories, his personality and his soul into everything that Virgin stands for.

So, whether you are solopreneur, small business or large business, brand yourself and your business will skyrocket.

Five reasons to brand yourself in your business are:

1. Your customers want to know who they’re dealing with

People want to do business with someone they like and relate to. So, whether you’re selling products or services, it’s easier for people to like you if they get to know you through your website, landing pages, ads, blog posts and social media content.  And, it’s easier to build a relationship and loyalty with someone rather than a faceless business. Remember, that doesn’t mean everyone will like or want to do business with you but that’s ok, you don’t need everyone!

2. Build trust

You have lots of options to build trust in your business and brand yourself.  Blogging, website content, social media posts, video, webinars and photos.   Video is one of the best ways to build trust quickly in your business.  People can see you and hear you and decide very quickly if they want to hear more.  Many people, myself included, are very self-conscious on video.  We don’t like how we look or sound and initially there are a lot of ummmms!  Persevere!  It will get easier and you will get used to it. You can always start off with you and then change to slides or screen sharing etc.  It doesn’t have to be all you for your customers to get to know you.

3. Easier to build your own brand

Doing a branding session from scratch for a company is a huge undertaking. You need to consider so many different things including logo, colours, voice (heart and soul of the business), positioning in the market, target audience, promise to your customers.  To brand yourself is very much easier. You are uniquely you. You have your personality and your way of doing things.  If you are an accountant for example, there are millions of accountants out there, but only you.  Add some quirkiness and don’t hide your personality.  Add your face to your social media and marketing and you will be memorable.

4. Ads convert better

Facebook ads definitely convert better with a face than without.  People attract people.  Do some split testing with your profile image in the ad and without and see which one converts better!

5. Cheaper

Having a professional branding session is very expensive and quite a long process. For a small business or a solopreneur, you can save yourself a lot of money by branding yourself.  You can still have a logo and choose a colour palette to use across your platforms for uniformity.  Try to get some good photos taken that you can use quickly and easily when you need them.

**************

If your business is already up and running and you are hiding behind your logo, the time has come to catapult yourself into the limelight.  Even the large corporations have their CEO or a celebrity appearing in their media to create a more personal touch.  You don’t need the cost of a celebrity though (unless Cate Blanchett is your best friend and willing to do ads for you for free!!!), you have you. So brand yourself and watch your business fly.
