Howv. For  What is a healthy website is and why should you care about having one?

Websites require ongoing maintenance for everything to keep working well.  In addition, it will also limit the chances of your site being hacked. Without being too anxious about it all, there are a some simple things you can do to make sure you have a healthy website.

1. HTTPS (Secure HyperText Transfer Protocol)

This is a protocol used to provide security over the Internet. It guarantees that users are talking to the server they expect, and that nobody else can intercept or change the content they’re seeing in transit. Every website should have an SSL certificate (Secure Sockets Layer) which will give it an extra layer of security.  As a result, it will then show as HTTPS rather than HTTP.  Most importantly, it will also allow secured transactions like credit cards if required. From July 2018 Google is going to mark all websites that are HTTP Not Secure in a move to make the web more secure.  Consequently, if your website is HTTP, it’s time to get it updated to HTTPS!

2. Strong Passwords

Your website password should be updated regularly and should be a complex password with a mixture of uppercase letters, numbers and special characters. If you control your own hosting or cPanel, the same advice goes for those passwords too. Do not use the same password for everything online and never make it as easy as Password123!

3. Update Regularly

A healthy website should be well maintained always. Many people think they can build a website and forget about it but this is certainly not the case. Website platforms like WordPress or Joomla are put together with a range of plug ins to give that website different features. However, the website platform and the plug ins all need to be updated regularly to ensure they are still compatible and working optimally.

4. Backups

We recommend regular backups because the worst can always happen.  That is to say, hard drives can fail and websites can be hacked. At the time of doing an update, it is always a good idea to get your development team to take a fresh back up as well. If your site is hacked or there is a hard drive failure, having regular backups means you can have your website restored quickly and easily with little pain or expense.

5. Security

Website security software will also help keep your website healthy. For example, software like Sitelock can be installed by your website developer.  Sitelock automatically and regularly scans your website to remove any malware or code that has been hacked.
