All non-SSL websites will be marked Not Secure from 1 July 2018 – Google Announcement.

Websites will need to be changed over from http to https for Google to consider them ‘secure’.  Here is a simple explanation of what is going on:

HTTP or HyperText Transfer Protocol

HTTP is the traditional or ‘default’ way data is transmitted over the internet. This is the way most website have been set up if they aren’t retaining confidential information like credit card details.

HTTPS or Secure HyperText Transfer Protocol

HTTPS allows secured transactions. With the purchase of an SSL certificate (Secure Sockets Layer), there is an extra layer of security which is what Google likes.

In addition, Google is now using HTTPS as a ranking indicator, whether you store confidential information like credit card details or not.  So keeping your website as HTTP will ultimately affect your SEO or search engine optimisation.

Those with SSL will have the little secure padlock next to their ULR. See the image below:

With the release of Chrome 68 in July 2018, Chrome will mark all HTTP sites as ‘not secure’.

It will certainly discourage visitors to your site if your site is marked Not Secure by Google. In effect, this is not recommended if you are trying to get more sales, enquiries or traffic!

If you are moving your site from HTTP to HTTPS, make sure you update your URL with Google which means in your Webmaster Tools and Google Analytics.

In conclusion, we recommend staying up to date with Google’s changes which is basically about moving towards a more secure web. It also means you will have a far more secure system for your website.
